BESS price 2026: what a battery storage system actually costs, by layer and by market

A turnkey battery energy storage system cost a global average of $117/kWh in 2025, according to BloombergNEF, but the price a buyer sees depends almost entirely on which layer is being quoted and where. In China, 4-hour systems cleared at an average of RMB 0.50/Wh (about $70/kWh) in July 2026 tenders, while the same scope in the United States averaged $219/kWh in 2025. For Southeast Asian buyers, the number that matters is neither of these: it is the installed EPC price, which in China alone ran at roughly RMB 1.0/Wh in July 2026, about twice the system price.

What is the price of a BESS per kWh in 2026?

It depends on the layer. At cell level, Chinese LFP cells sold for as little as $47/kWh in a May 2026 state-owned procurement. At system level, Chinese 4-hour systems averaged about $70/kWh in July 2026. At turnkey level, BNEF’s 2025 global average was $117/kWh. At installed EPC level in China, the price was roughly $140/kWh. Each figure is correct; they describe different scopes.

Why is the EPC price twice the system price?

Because the system price stops at the container. EPC adds transformers, switchgear, civil works, grid connection, commissioning and the contractor’s margin. In July 2026 Chinese EPC prices rose 4–6% month on month while system prices fell 2–6%. Cheaper batteries do not automatically mean cheaper projects, because installation and grid costs do not follow the lithium curve.

What is the BESS cost per MWh?

For capital cost, $117/kWh equals $117,000 per MWh of storage capacity at the 2025 global average. For delivered energy, Ember estimated a levelised cost of storage of about $65/MWh in October 2025. Tariffs from Indian tenders give a market check: Uttar Pradesh cleared at INR 6.45/kWh (about $68/MWh) for a 4-hour standalone system in 2026.

Why is BESS cheaper in China than in Europe or the US?

The equipment is largely the same. The difference is everything around it: land, labour, grid connection, permitting, tariffs on imported equipment, and — in the US — the cost of meeting foreign-entity rules. BNEF’s 2025 survey put China at $73/kWh and the US at $219/kWh, a threefold gap on similar hardware.

What should ASEAN buyers use as their benchmark?

Neither the Chinese system price nor the US average. Southeast Asian projects import most of their equipment from China but pay local costs for installation and grid connection, which puts them closer to Ember’s “global excluding China and US” figure of about $125/kWh all-in than to the $70/kWh Chinese system price. A bid that looks expensive against Chinese headlines may simply be quoting EPC scope. Before comparing, check three things: whether PCS and transformers are included, whether the price is per kWh of nameplate or usable capacity, and whether grid connection is in scope.

For the tenders these prices are being bid into, see BESS tenders in Southeast Asia 2026.

Why these numbers move so fast

Chinese cell prices fell sharply through 2025 and 2026 on overcapacity. BNEF’s global average dropped 31% in a single year, from $169/kWh (2024) to $117/kWh (2025). Any quote older than six months should be re-checked before it is used in a financial model.

The method for separating cell, system and EPC scope when benchmarking bids is part of Projects, Tenders & Market Sizing.
